Our state’s budget reflects our state’s priorities; it reflects what and ultimately whom our elected leaders care about.
The Young Democrats of RI commend the General Assembly for demonstrating their commitment to improving the quality of our schools by fully funding the education formula and the restoration of funding to programs for the developmentally disabled. However, we find it unacceptable that this budget virtually ignores the homelessness crisis in our state, our crumbling infrastructure, and does not address job creation in a meaningful way. Instead the budget continues to divert funding away from crucial public programs and gives the money to those who already have it. Most outrageously, rather than asking the wealthy to pay their fair share in taxes, some 6,500 of our neighbors will lose their health insurance received via RItecare. We can and should do better than this.
The Young Democrats of RI urges our Democratic legislature to hold true to one of the core principles of our party: that we succeed when everyone gets a fair shot, when everyone does their fair share, and when everyone plays by the same rules. The FY 2014 budget should provide equal opportunity for all Rhode Islanders.
